From the suburb Pickerington, Ohio, I used to get together with my friends and make short films as many filmmakers do. At this point directing was my focus. I didn't know the beauty and dedication that a Cinematographer elicits throughout the course of a film.
The introduction to this process came when I started at Columbia College Chicago. After my first semester, I was dead set on a career in Cinematography. There is something so thrilling about being behind the camera: even as a Second Camera Assistant or a Camera PA. Seeing a Camera perform at its capacity is mesmerizing.
As I progressed through the Cinematography education, these miraculous feats of engineering began to make more sense. I understood how a camera works. The only thing I could do from this point was to move forward. I began to branch out. I got on sets of student films, increasing my understand and experience in both the Camera and Grip and Electric departments. I went a slightly different path and began to work at one of the largest Camera Rental houses in Chicago Daufenbach Camera. I learned something every day by working through this company and it helped me gain working connections.
I began to get work outside of Columbia through these connections. I went from being a Camera PA on feature films to a Second Camera Assistant or a Key Grip on commercials and feature films.
